Lip contour, also referred to as lip shading in North Vancouver, is commonly chosen by individuals seeking natural definition without adding volume. It’s a semi-permanent pigment-based treatment that focuses on enhancing the natural outline of the lips. It is applied along the lip border to improve definition while maintaining a balanced and natural-looking appearance.
Lip Contour vs Lip Filler
Lip contour is designed to refine shape and definition, while lip filler is used to increase volume. This approach does not change lip size, but instead supports a more defined and proportionate appearance.
Lip Contour vs Lip Blush
Lip blush distributes pigment across the entire lip to create an even tone, whereas lip contour is focused on the edges. This allows for targeted enhancement of the lip border without altering overall lip colour.
Aesthetic Goals and Longevity
The goal is to support symmetry, improve border definition, and contribute to facial harmony. Results are typically subtle and fade gradually over time. This approach is often chosen by individuals seeking refinement without volume-based treatments.
Lip shading uses a cosmetic tattooing technique where pigment is carefully deposited into the upper layers of the skin using a fine, controlled device. The goal is to enhance the natural lip border and improve overall definition without creating harsh lines or unnatural colour.
Pigment Placement and Layering
The pigment is applied gradually in light layers along the lip border, allowing for controlled colour buildup. This layered approach helps achieve a soft, natural transition rather than a sharply outlined appearance.
Colour Selection
Pigment colour is selected based on natural lip tone, skin undertone, and desired outcome. The goal is to complement existing features rather than override them, supporting a balanced and natural-looking result.
Healing and Final Result
After treatment, the pigment initially appears darker and softens as the skin heals. Over the following days, mild flaking may occur as the outer layer renews. The final colour becomes more natural as healing progresses, with full results visible after the touch-up session.
Certain medical conditions or recent treatments may not be suitable for lip shading and should be assessed during consultation to reduce the risk of complications.
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding: treatment may not be suitable during this period
- Active cold sores or frequent outbreaks: may require postponement and preventive care
- Active infections in the lip or oral area: should be fully resolved before treatment
- Blood clotting disorders: require clinical assessment prior to proceeding
- Use of blood thinners: may increase sensitivity and should be reviewed
- Certain autoimmune conditions: suitability should be evaluated individually
- Diabetes (uncontrolled): may require medical clearance before treatment
- Known allergies to pigments: should be discussed during consultation
- History of keloid scarring: may increase risk of abnormal healing
- Lip filler within the last 4 weeks: treatment should be delayed
- Recent lip or oral procedures within 6 months: may require postponement
Proper preparation helps support a smoother treatment experience and reduces the likelihood of sensitivity during and after the procedure.
- 24 hours before treatment: Avoid alcohol and caffeine. Refrain from using Aspirin, Niacin, Vitamin E, Advil, or Ibuprofen, as these may increase sensitivity or affect skin response.
- 1 week before treatment: Avoid sun exposure and tanning. Refrain from microdermabrasion and chemical peels to minimize skin irritation in the treatment area.
- Additional considerations: Avoid scheduling dental work immediately before treatment. Maintain adequate hydration in the days leading up to your appointment. Consult your physician before stopping any prescribed blood thinners.
- Cold sore prevention: If you have a history of cold sores, preventive care may be required prior to treatment and should be discussed during consultation.
- Sensitivity note: Skin may be more sensitive during the menstrual cycle, which can influence comfort levels during treatment.
Proper aftercare is recommended to support healing and maintain the intended appearance following lip contour treatment.
- First 24–48 hours: Use a cold compress gently, avoiding direct contact with the skin. Avoid touching or applying pressure to the lips during this initial period.
- Sleeping position: Keep your head slightly elevated while resting to help reduce swelling and support circulation.
- Activities to avoid: Avoid intense heat, sauna use, swimming, sun exposure, tanning, and heavy exercise, as these may affect the healing process.
- Lip care restrictions: Avoid applying cosmetic or skincare products directly to the lips. Limit excessive licking, as it may interfere with skin recovery.
- Healing behaviour: Do not scratch, peel, or rub any flaking skin. Avoid scrubbing or friction on the treated area to reduce the risk of irritation.
- Hygiene guidance: Keep the area clean and dry. Follow any additional care instructions provided during your appointment.
When to contact the clinic: Contact the clinic if you notice unusual swelling, signs of infection, or prolonged discomfort beyond the expected healing period.
A touch-up session is typically scheduled 4–6 weeks after the initial treatment to assess how the pigment has settled during healing. The provider reviews pigment retention, evaluates symmetry, and identifies any areas where colour may appear lighter or uneven.
Based on this assessment, small refinements are made to improve definition and overall balance. Pigment may heal differently across individuals, so this step allows for precise adjustment based on healing response.
At Celebrity Laser & Skin Care, this follow-up process is structured to support consistent outcomes, with attention to detail and individualized refinement as part of the treatment plan.
Lip contour may be suitable for individuals with thin or less-defined lip borders, uneven lip shape, or a faded outline. It is often considered for mild asymmetry or those seeking subtle enhancement and natural-looking definition rather than changes in lip size.
This treatment may not be suitable for individuals expecting volume increase or filler-like results. It should be postponed in cases of active infections or cold sores, and certain medical conditions may require assessment. Unrealistic expectations may also affect suitability, as results are designed to remain balanced and gradual.
The cost of lip contour depends on session length and the overall treatment plan, which may include an initial session and a follow-up touch-up. The cost of lip contour is $600 for the initial session and $200 for the follow-up session.
At Celebrity Laser & Skin Care, each treatment begins with a consultation to confirm a personalized plan and treatment approach. Financing options are available, with rates as low as 0% interest, allowing payments to be spread over time. You may schedule a consultation to discuss your treatment options.

The lips are numbed using topical anesthetics both before and during the procedure. You might feel minor tingling/vibration or discomfort throughout the treatment.
The procedure takes approximately 3 hours. It includes pre-numbing, measuring and mapping out the lip shape most suitable for your facial structure. The treatment specialist will then confirm and obtain your approval and start the procedure.
Immediately after the procedure, the pigment will appear relatively intense and the lips will be mildly swollen.
Day 1: lips must be cleansed with a damp cotton pad every 30 minutes. Do not be alarmed if pigment appears on the cotton pad. There will be color deposit remaining on the lip for 24 hours.
Day 2: cleaning frequency is reduced to every 2-3 hours.
Day 3 onwards: clean the lips three times a day and apply small amount of the provided cream. The lip skin will start to feel very dry at this point. The color might appear extremely faded and will reappear through the course of healing.
The lip healing process is approximately 7 days; however you are encouraged to continue monitoring the color changes for the 28 days.
